Photography sessions with me are relaxed, natural, and led by real moments rather than stiff poses. A little preparation can help everyone feel more comfortable and allow the session to flow naturally.
For most portrait sessions, one outfit is more than enough and often works best for keeping things calm and unpressured, particularly with children. If you would like a change of outfit, I recommend keeping it simple and limiting it to one quick change.
Choosing outfits that are comfortable and easy to move in will help the session run smoothly. Layers (such as jumpers, jackets, or cardigans) are a great way to create variety without the need for a full outfit change.
If you are unsure whether an outfit change will work for your session, feel free to ask in advance and I will be happy to advise.
Comfort is key. Neutral tones, soft colours, and simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than clothing. Try to avoid large logos, strong stripes, or very bright colours, as these can be distracting in photographs.
Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in, especially for children. If you are unsure, I am always happy to offer guidance ahead of your session.
You do not need lots of props or elaborate planning. Simple, meaningful items such as a favourite toy, book, or blanket can help children feel at ease and add a personal touch to your images.
Keeping things minimal allows the focus to stay on interaction, movement, and genuine moments.
If possible, allow a little extra time before your session so everyone arrives calm and settled. Children pick up on energy, and a relaxed start makes a big difference.
There is no pressure for everything to be perfect, sessions are designed to be flexible and child-led.
There is no expectation for children to sit still, smile on cue, or behave in a particular way. Some of the best moments come from curiosity, movement, and play.
I work gently and patiently, allowing children to take the lead and feel comfortable in their own time.
My approach is documentary and unobtrusive. I will guide you when needed, but most of the session is about allowing moments to unfold naturally. You do not need to worry about what to do, just enjoy being together, and I will take care of the rest.
Choosing the right location can make a big difference to how relaxed and natural your photographs feel. If you are unsure where to go, please do not worry, I am always happy to help.
I work with a variety of outdoor and indoor locations across Kent, including parks, woodlands, open spaces, and familiar local environments. The best location will depend on the type of session, the time of year, and what feels most comfortable for you and your family.
Once you have made an enquiry, I can suggest suitable locations based on your needs, taking into account things like accessibility, quieter areas for children, and natural light. Home-based sessions are also a lovely option and can be perfect for capturing relaxed, meaningful moments in a familiar space.
My aim is always to choose a location that allows sessions to feel calm, unhurried, and true to real life.
If you already have a location in mind, I am very happy to photograph there too.
